What is Loose Part Play?

Loose parts create endless possibilities and invite creativity. For example, if a child picks up a rock and starts to play, most likely that rock can become anything the child wants it to be. Imagination, creativity, curiosity, desire, and need are the motivation of loose parts. Loose parts are materials that can be moved, carried, combined, redesigned, lined up, and taken apart, and put back together in multiple ways. Loose parts can be used alone or combined with other materials. There is no set of specific directions for materials that are considered loose parts. The child is the direction. Loose Parts is the groundwork for engaging in open-ended learning environments.

What are open-ended learning environments?

A term strongly connected to loose parts is open-ended. Open-ended materials, environments, and experiences encourage problem-solving and are child-centered. Children involve themselves in concrete experiences using loose parts, which lead to explorations that occur naturally, as opposed to adult-directed. However, adults do play important, intentional roles in preparing, guiding, and documenting open-ended learning experiences. Consider how often children enjoy bringing materials from one area to another and making connections, such as the child who brings pretend food from the dramatic play area into the block area or the child who offers a plate of rocks and grass and shares his recipe for spaghetti; how creative! When children are encouraged to integrate play materials and areas in their own creative ways, they are experiencing open-ended learning.

What does KPC use for curriculum?

KidZone Preschool & Childcare use One in Christ & Emergent Curriculum in education both spiritual and academic from birth - 5 years old.

Emergent curriculum is an early education approach where teachers design projects unique to a child or group of children. Learn what makes it successful, and find out if it is right for your child.

An emergent curriculum is a developmentally appropriate approach to planning for children's learning in early childhood settings. Through this approach, teachers gain a greater understanding of each child's individual needs, allowing for thoughtful and individualized programming.

Imagine you visit a preschool program, and notice children in each room deeply engaged in a variety of activities and projects. In one room, a group of children makes a car wash out of cardboard. Other children in the room engage individually and in small groups making elaborate block structures, retelling the story from a favorite book, or writing invitations to an upcoming event. In the next room, a small group of children in the block area figures out which angle of a ramp helps small cars go the fastest. At the easel, children experiment with mixing colors. In the math area, children form sets of seven using small interlocking blocks. You notice one of the teachers observing and jotting down notes on what the children are doing.

What are play-based learning experiences?

A play-based learning environment encourages talking, reading, thinking, and writing. Through this, your child sees literacy and numeracy as part of their everyday experience. Play along with them and you will be amazed at what you can learn together!

For example, while children are playing with blocks, a teacher can pose questions that encourage problem solving, prediction, and hypothesizing. The teacher can also bring the child’s awareness towards mathematics, science, and literacy concepts. . How tall can this get?  How many blocks do you need?  Can you BLOW the house down?  Who else does that?  These simple questions elevate the simple stacking of blocks to the application of learning. Through play like this, children can develop social and cognitive skills, mature emotionally, and gain the self-confidence required to engage in new experiences and environments.

What is KPC’s belief?

  • We believe that all Scripture is God-breathed (2 Timothy 3:16). It is inspired by God and the infallible and authoritative word of God.  All Scripture should be the guide for our practical instruction for faith and our lives (John 5:39; Romans 15:4; 1 Corinthians 10:11).

  • We believe in the one living Triune God:  Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

  • We believe God our father, the almighty, is the one and only true eternal God.  He called all of creation into being.

  • We believe God is a God of love (1 John 4:8-10) and made us in His likeness (Genesis 1:27).

  • We believe Jesus Christ, God’s one and only son, suffered and died on the cross as the perfect sacrifice for sin; that He was buried and, in three days, He rose again.  We believe He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

  • We believe the Holy Spirit lives in those who believe and that through the gifts of His Spirit, we are equipped for the works He has planned for us (Ephesians 2:10).

  • We believe that Christian Education—educating people to know Christ as our Lord and Savior—is important from the crib to the grave.  My desire is to see not only children and youth, but adults, to grow in their knowledge and understanding of God’s love for us.

Smaller ratios also allow teachers to engage with children at any age to increase positive learning experiences.

6 weeks - 12 months  |  4 to 1 ratio

1 year - 2 years |  5 to 1 ratio

2 year - 3 years |  5 to 1 ratio

3 years old - 5 years old | 10 to 1 ratio
